Playa del Carmen, Mexico – The silky soft sand beaches of Playa del Carmen, the hot-spot Mexican Caribbean town, are about to become even wider and nicer, as the government- sponsored machinery is starting to move to the coastal area.
The beach restoration is starting today, on January 11, and is expected to be finished by the beginning of February, 2010. To cover 2.6 miles (4.2 km) of Playa del Carmen’s beaches, about 2.6 billion cubic feet (800 million cubic meters) of sand will be required.
Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen, a group of five luxury condominiums clustered in the premier area of Playa del Carmen, also known as the “golden zone,” led charge in convincing the government to move forward with the project that has been on hold for several years. The work will commence at Constituyentes Avenue, where the Condo Hotels is located, and will continue along the beach.
The beach expansion project will also result in the installation of four linked docks to be used by small boats, fishing boats among them. Four wooden docks will not only help preserve the beach and area, but will also give tourists who use boats the highest level of safety. The docks will be installed by the main streets of Playa del Carmen: 12, 10, 8 and 6.
While the project will widen all of Playa del Carmen’s “golden zone” and estate area, the machinery and noise will not overwhelm the whole coastline. The sand used for beach widening is being pumped from the depths of the ocean and transported to the shore. The sand is being taken from 60 feet-deep ocean bottom that is coral-free, and environmental studies have been conducted in order to protect the natural environment of the ocean before the beginning of the project. This way, a new shoreline is being created, and about 200 feet of coastline is being covered ever day. The coastline is not being altered, but restored to its natural state that has been eroded over the past 20 years due to inclement weather patterns.
Actually, the majority of the beaches will be accessible to visitors and hotel guests, while re-construction work will be moving from one area to another. The whole project is expected to take only about a couple of weeks.
As a matter of fact, the work is expected to be completed before the grand opening of the newest addition to Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen, the luxury El Taj Oceanfront condo hotel, located right on the beach that is being reconstructed. A brand new beach club and a 5-star restaurant are also planned for El Taj Oceanfront. To find out more, please visit www.condohotelsplayadelcarmen.com.
The beach widening is exciting news for the current and future owners of units in the new luxury development, as the real estate value of this and other properties will continue to rise. At the same time, Playa del Carmen will keep luring even more visitors, as the area’s development is increasing. While preserving the charm of a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen can boast a strong commitment of the local government and property owners to make the area even more attractive and appealing to residents and tourists, and the beach widening project is just one example of this on-going dedication.
