Dredging Planned for Bay Port Harbor (USA)

The Detroit District has awarded a contract for dredging Bay Port Harbor, Mich., on Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. Malcolm Marine, Inc., of St. Clair, Mich., a small business, was awarded a $1,036,100 contract to dredge the shallow-draft harbor.

The contractor is slated to dredge 40,000 cubic yards of silt/sand/organic shoal material and deposit it in a government-furnished placement site, the Wallace Stone Quarry in Huron County.

The work is expected to be done next summer and should take about 60 days. “Removing the shoals that have built up over time will make Bay Port Harbor much more navigable, to the benefit of local boaters and anglers,” said Lt. Col. Michael Derosier, district engineer. “We are pleased to be a part of this harbor revitalization.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, maintains a navigation system with 95 harbors including the Great Lakes Connecting Channels that join lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie.
