Peel Ports Names Programme Director for Liverpool Container Terminal Project

Peel Ports has appointed Douglas Coleman; one of the UK’s most experienced project directors, as its Programme Director for the construction of the planned in-river container terminal at the Port of Liverpool. The primary purpose of Coleman’s role is to take charge of the landmark container terminal project, with the job also involving the development of other key related projects along the length of the Manchester Ship Canal; including Port Bridgewater and Port Salford.

Coleman said: “My role is to develop a number of vital projects for the business in the North West, with the in-river container terminal acting as a catalyst for further opportunities along the Manchester Ship Canal.

“I’m delighted to be joining Peel Ports at this exciting phase of expansion. There is no doubt that the new container terminal will represent a transformational project for the business. By any standard it is a significant development and a major investment.

“I am excited by the challenges that such a construction project presents, it is a technically complex project, but eminently achievable. From a professional perspective, it’s one that I’m greatly looking forward to.”

Prior to joining Peel Ports, Coleman (56) was Project Director at Forth Ports PLC for six years, where he was responsible for construction developments across the Group’s extensive land and property assets. While at Forth, he headed the development of the £1b master plan for Leith Docks, including Western Harbour and Granton Harbour.

His career also included nine years with Capita plc, where he was ultimately Scottish Regional Director. His main responsibilities were the delivery of multifaceted infrastructure and regeneration projects, specialising in Brownfield site development works. He was Project Manager of the £1.2b Glasgow Harbour project which involved a secondment to Peel Ports company Clydeport, with other projects including Deutsche Bank in Edinburgh and the Mazagan Resort in Morocco.

He has also previously worked overseas in the Middle East and North Africa.

Peel Ports Managing Director Gary Hodgson said:“The appointment of the Programme Director is a significant milestone in the delivery of the River Terminal. Doug Coleman has a proven track record at a number of major companies within our industry; heading up major transformational projects both in this country and overseas. This is a key time for the Peel Ports Group, with exciting developments to come, and I know we have made a strong appointment.”
