Ukraine Plans Development of Inland Waterways

Ministry of Infrastructure will work over creation of all necessary conditions for the development of inland waterway transport in Ukraine.

Now the Ministry has established a working group that will work in this direction. The corresponding order is signed March 16, 2012 by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Borys Kolesnikov.

The working group iwill hold a comprehensive analysis of the current state of river traffic and the main problems hindering their development. As a result of this analysis, the group will develop practical proposals for the development of inland waterway transport in Ukraine – it involves the renovation of river infrastructure, dredging, ensuring an adequate level of safety of navigation, as the introduction of a flexible tariff policy and other important measures that should help build volumes river transportation.

In addition, group work will be done to improve the existing legislation in this area – if necessary, be prepared to make appropriate suggestions and comments on the draft Law “On the navigation on inland waterways” and other regulations.

To provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state of navigation on the inland waterways of Ukraine and taking into account diverse views on the proposals and its further development, the Working Group included experts from the Ministry as well as the industry – Shipping Register of Ukraine, Administration of River Ports, “Delta-pilot” “Ukrvodshlyah”, and UZ, the Association of International Road Carriers of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Trade Union of River Transport. In addition, the group involved and representatives of business – private organizations whose activities are directly related to transportation by water transport.
