The Government intends to carry out dredging works within an area of about 428 hectares of sea-bed at Kwai Tsing Container Basin and portions of the Northern Fairway, Western Fairway and East Lamma Channel to a level of approximately 17.5 metres below Chart Datum.

The proposed works will enable unrestricted access for the new generation of ultra-large container ships to Kwai Tsing Container Terminals.

The works are scheduled to commence in late 2013 and be completed by 2016.

Kwai Chung-Tsing Yi basin includes nine terminals operated by five different operators, namely Modern Terminals Ltd (MTL), Hongkong International Terminals Ltd (HIT), COSCO-HIT, DP World and Asia Container Terminals Ltd (ACT). They occupy 279 hectares of land, providing 24 berths and 7,694 metres of deep water frontage.

The water depth of the Kwai Chung-Tsing Yi basin is 15.5 metres. The total handling capacity of the container terminals is over 19 million TEUs per year.
