The Surfbreak Protection Society (SPS) said that the dredging project inside Whangamata Harbour is threatening the renowned Whangamata bar.

According to the Waikati Times, SPS also called on the regional council to increase the monitoring of this dredging work.

Paul Shanks, SPS president, said:“Our concern is the maintenance dredging of the marina access channel has upset the natural sediment cycle and as a result the bar has become unstable.”
