Two weeks ago, an emergency dredging project near Bowditch Point at the Matanzas Pass has begun.

The Fort Myers Beach officials proposed a plan which includes the placing of the dredged sand onto the Newton Beach, located about one to two miles south from the Bowditch Point, according to abc-7.com.

Alan Mandel, Fort Myers Beach Town Councilman, stated: “The synergy of doing a dredging and beach nourishment at the same time is wonderful, and saves a lot of money.”

It is really important for us to make sure that this channel is maintained in good shape for the vessels to come in safely,” said Steve Boutelle, Operations Manager for the county Division of Natural Resources.
