11 New Dredgers

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) introduced a plan to add eleven new dredgers to its current fleet by September 2013, reports thefinancialexpress-bd.com.

This information was announced yesterday, at the Shipping Ministry’s meeting on “different projects of BIWTA, purchase of dredgers under revenue budget and dredging activities.”

Shajahan Khan, the Shipping Minister, presided over the meeting and among the attendees were: Shipping Secretary Syed Monjurul Islam, BIWTA chairman Md Shamsuddoha Khandaker, BIWTA member (engineering) Firoz Ahmed and chief engineer (dredging) Abdul Matin.

At the moment, BIWTA is operating with ten 18-inch cutter suction dredgers, and among these, seven were procured before 1975.
