UK: APM Terminals Receives Prestigious Award

APM Terminals was announced as the 2013 “International Terminal Operator of the Year” at the annual Containerisation International Awards ceremony held in London on October 24th.

This is the second consecutive year as winner of the award, one of eleven categories for which awards are presented by UK-based industry publication Containerisation International, in recognition of “companies and individuals that, over the past year, have made an outstanding contribution to the container liner shipping and logistics industry, either through being innovative, proactive and pioneering”.

The 2013 award, for which the independent judging panel gave particular emphasis to terminal operations which have demonstrated achievement, environmental sensitivity and improved value and reliability for customers, was accepted on behalf of APM Terminals by the Vice President for Strategy and Business Development, Francois-Xavier Delenclos. APM Terminals was also named winner of the 2012 “International Terminal Operator of Year” Award last year.

“We are very proud to have earned this tremendous honor once again, for the second year running, as recognition of our efforts to set the industry standard in service and operations as well as environmentally sustainable infrastructure design and development. This award goes to the men and women of our company who define APM Terminals every day in this very competitive industry,” said Mr. Delenclos.

In 2012, APM Terminals achieved a further 4% reduction in CO2 emissions per TEU through a broad program of sustainable green energy initiatives, including RTG electrification and CO2-neutral terminal operations. A new industry standard for environmentally sustainable terminal operations has been established through the design and equipping of the new APM Terminals Maasvlakte II deep-water terminal at the Port of Rotterdam.

Design improvements, equipment orders and deliveries in 2012 created a blueprint for all future terminal operations with the creation of the world’s first zero emissions container terminal.

The new Maasvlakte II terminal will open in November 2014 with the ability to handle the world’s largest containerships. The electrification of all container handling equipment and green generated power will allow the terminal to eliminate harmful greenhouse gas and particulate emissions. The flexibility of electrical sourcing also creates the potential to shift more of the facility’s energy supply to solar and wind as they become available and economically viable.

Similar innovations are planned for APM Terminals’ six other new port projects currently in development as well as 17 facility expansions now underway.

“Our operations and new development are a team effort in which every part of the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network plays a role, and this is an honor in which we can all share with great pride,” added Mr. Delenclos.
