Maguindanao Plans to Dredge Liguasan Marshland

The Provincial Government of Maguindanao is about to start a major dredging project that will save low-lying communities in Maguindanao and nearby provinces from floods.

The project, set to begin by the end of the month, involves the dredging of the 220,000-hectare Liguasan marshland, also known as Maguindanao marshland. The project will mitigate flooding that has been pestering more than half of Maguindanao’s municipalities.

The provincial government will earmark a huge portion of its loans as counterpart for the dredging project,” announced yesterday Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu.

”I proposed the dredging works on portions of the Liguasan Marsh because we really need to mitigate the frequent overflowing of water from the delta to our province during rainy days,” said Mangudadatu.

The marshland straddles in three provinces of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and North Cotabato. It serves as catch basin of river waters from the upland communities in the provinces of North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and even Bukidnon.
