Congresswoman Celebrates Federal Funding for Breakwater Repairs

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will spend $14 million on repairs to the damaged San Pedro and Long Beach breakwaters, U.S. Representative Janice Hahn’s office announced on Tuesday.

“This is a huge relief,” said Congresswoman Janice Hahn. “I have been fighting for repairs to our breakwater for some time now and I am happy that the Army Corps recognized their importance.”

Congresswoman Hahn was informed of significant damage to the San Pedro Breakwater when she requested information from the Army Corps on El Niño preparations.

The Army Corps identified four areas of major damage and twelve areas of significant damage along the breakwater. The damage makes the breakwater vulnerable to a breach and could cause a shutdown of the Port of Los Angeles.

Since then Congresswoman Hahn has called on the Army Corps to dedicate federal funding to repairing the damage, toured the breakwater to see the damage in person and has had numerous meetings and calls with Army Corps officials about this issue.
