The construction of the 2016 Island-wide Beach renourishment project is officially underway, according to the Town of Hilton Head.

The Town’s contractor, Weeks Marine, Inc., began the pumping of sand on Mitchelville Beach in the morning hours of June 17, 2016 with its cutterhead suction dredge, CR McCaskill.

Sand placement in this immediate area is expected to be complete in approximately 1 week.

From here, the work will advance to the shoreline of Port Royal Plantation.

During the 5 month renourishment project, worth $20.7 million, construction operations will proceed around the clock and will, on average, move along the shoreline at a rate of about 200 to 300 feet per day.
