Hilton Head Island Beaches Get New Sand

The beach area between Drayton Place and Elliot Place is currently restricted for beach renourishment construction, the Town of Hilton Head Island just announced in its latest update.

Additionally, the Mitchelville Beach area remains closed so construction in this area may be finished.

The Town’s contractor, Weeks Marine, Inc., began the sand pumping operations in this area on June 17, 2016 with its cutterhead suction dredge, CR McCaskill.

This week, crews will begin to preposition equipment and pipeline from the north side of the island to the South Beach area.

The goal is to have the pipeline and equipment in place and fenced off before the 4th of July weekend.

Work in the South Beach area will not commence until work is near completion at the heel area of the island.

During the 5 month renourishment project, worth $20.7 million, construction operations will proceed around the clock and will, on average, move along the shoreline at a rate of about 200 to 300 feet per day.
