Launching Ceremony of LNG TSHD Scheldt River Next Week

The launching ceremony of DEME’s 7.950m³ LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Scheldt River will take place on Saturday, 14 January, 2017, at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands.

The Scheldt River is the second dredging vessel in the world that is equipped with dual fuel engines and capable of operating in full LNG mode.

The 3.500m³ TSHD Minerva, launched on December 3, 2016 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, is the first vessel of this kind in the world.

These dual fuel (diesel and LNG) dredgers, powered by Wartsila engines, have a ‘Green Passport’ and a ‘Clean Design’ notation, complying and exceeding with the strictest international emission requirements.

The availability of the vessels has also been increased since they meet the requirements for the extended dry-docking system.

Ships under this special program get a maximum dry-dock interval of 7.5 years (instead of 5 years) by replacing certain dry-dockings with in-water surveys.

The launching ceremony of TSHD Minerva took place on December 3 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, the Netherlands.

DEME and Royal IHC have also won a DPC Innovation Award in London for the world’s first liquefied natural gas-powered TSHDs.

Hundreds of TSHDs and CSDs like this one will be collected and published in next year’s Dredging Vessel Directory, to be released in the first quarter of 2017.
