Monktonmead Brook Flood Scheme Set for Late 2017

The Environment Agency is currently working on a project that will reduce the risk of flooding in the Monktonmead area and improve the way Brook flows into the sea.

A shortlist of options were identified and presented to the community of Ryde in March 2016 during a 2-day workshop where the community were able to view and comment on the proposals and share local knowledge.

Funding has now been secured for the project and the Environment Agency is aiming to enter into the detailed design stage in August 2017. Engagement is ongoing with local residents through this stage of the project.

According to the Environment Agency, the plan is to start construction in late 2017, avoiding the tourist season. However this is subject to several factors, such as planning approval, weather conditions and other environmental constraints.

Following engagement with the community and an options appraisal process the preferred option to be taken forward to detailed design comprises of two work elements:

  1. Flood storage within the Simeon recreation ground achieved through the construction of flood walls around the perimeter of the recreation ground and adjacent to the railway line and the Monktonmead Brook;
  2. Installation of a new outfall into Ryde Harbor and removing the existing outfall currently extending onto the beach.
