Second Dredge for Buxton Beach Nourishment

Weeks Marine has resumed Buxton Beach Nourishment operations after two days of being shut down due to weather, reports Dare County.

According to the update, the contractor resumed pumping sand yesterday around 9:30. The current marine forecast looks favorable for pumping the next several days.

The cutterhead dredge McCaskill will work on filling a 900-foot section of beach just north of Buxton during the next five days of pumping and will then proceed south through the village of Buxton,” the update said.

In the meantime, Weeks Marine will be setting up a second subline approximately 5,000 ft north of the current subline. A second dredge – the ‘B.E. Lindham’ hopper dredge – is scheduled to arrive in Buxton next week, weather permitting.

Once the second dredge arrives and passes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ on-site pre-dredging inspection, pumping will start from the newly placed northern subline and proceed south.

Earlier this week, Coastal Science and Engineering (CSE), project manager for the Buxton Beach Nourishment Project, provided a detailed update at the Dare County Board of Commissioners’ meeting. CSE discussed production improvement measures that are being considered to expedite construction.
