Natural Resource Damages & the Gowanus Canal Lecture

Gowanus Studio Space, Brookly
Mar 13 2013 -

This presentation will discuss the Superfund Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) and restoration process. Superfund NRDA is different than Superfund cleanup and often results in settlements that fund restoration to compensate for lost ecological function or public uses of ecological resources. NRDA and related restoration are ongoing around the country; some example cases are the Deepwater Horizon and the Exxon Valdez oil spills. Injury assessment can cover a time period from the enactment of the Superfund law through the restoration of injured resources. While a decision has not yet been made on whether or not or when NRDA would begin on the Gowanus canal, it is a future possibility that could result in compensatory restoration of ecological and public resources.
