USA: Jupiter Island Demands Permanent Funding Solution for Inlet Dredging

The Town of Jupiter Island is threatening to sue Martin County if it does not come up with a source of permanent funding for the dredging of the St. Lucie Inlet by June 1.

The town insists on finding a permanent way to pay for a maintenance program that will keep sand out of the inlet that has become shallow due to drifting sand. Therefore, it is dangerously difficult to navigate.

Martin County Commission Chairman Ed Ciampi and County Commissioner Doug Smith stated that the inlet dredging and funding will probably come up at the county commission meeting scheduled for December 13.

“My position is that we need to do the most complete project we can with the amount of money we can pull together,” Smith said.

In anticipation of bids planned to be opened on December 5, there might be a week or two delay said Smith.
