USA: Congress OKs Sandbridge Beach Replenishment

According to a city news release, the Congress has approved the Sandbridge Beach replenishment project.

The funding for this beach replenishment will come from Sandbridge residents and property owners through extra taxes.

The Army Corps of Engineers could accept only up to 35 percent of the cost of such a project from the city. But federal money for such projects has dwindled. In July, the feds rejected Virginia Beach’s $15 million offer to pump sand at Sandbridge to buffer cottages and vacation rentals from potentially catastrophic storms.

The Congress’ action means the Sandbridge Beach replenishment project can proceed, at no cost to the federal government. The replenishment will start next year.
