St. Augustine Beach Renourishment About to Begin (USA)

The third cycle of the St. Augustine Beach renourishment project is to begin on Monday.

During the project, crews will place 2.1 million cubic yards of sand on the shore from the south boundary of Anastasia State Park to the Bermuda Run.

The project involves dredging sand around the inlet that will have been carried by ocean currents to the south and carefully laying it on the beaches south of the inlet.

The sand will come from the navigation channel on the south tip of Vilano Point, a widened navigation channel corridor and the south lobe of the inlet’s ebb shoal.

Located on Anastasia Island just east of the historic city of St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach receives an estimated 5 million visitors per year.
