USA: St. Joseph Harbor Dredging Meets Expectations

St. Joseph Harbor is now in good shape, officials say.

After weeks of waiting for the funds and good weather, dredging of the Saint Joseph Harbor was completed last month.

We look good right now. The water depths are good. If we lose more water depth that reduces how much clearance the boats have to get in. So right now we’re looking good. The emergency dredge was done out at the mouth of the river. It allowed the boats to get into the river. That’s where the blockage was”, stated Lee Scherwitz, Harbor Authority Board Member.

Rep. Fred Upton, (R) 6th District, explains why it was so important to get this done, “We know that it is so important as it relates to jobs and the economy for any construction project, thus it is so much more economical for it to come by ship than it is by the heavy duty trucks.”

Ships haven’t been able to enter the harbor since mid-December, what means only a fraction of supplies has been delivered.
