Port of Praia Expansion Progresses Well

Expansion and modernization of the Port of Praia is expected to be completed in May 2013 under a project funded by a 200 million-euro line of credit provided by Portugal, reports Cape Verdean newspaper Expresso das Ilhas.

Portuguese construction consortium Somague/MSF/Etermar will carry out the second phase of work at a cost of 72 million euros. The concept of this second phase incorporates refurbishment and extension of the existing docks, construction of a protective cover for the container park and building a 234-metre-long breakwater.

Dredging of the manoeuvre basin, installation of a navigational support system, including construction of the container park, are already underway.

Undertakings in Palmeira (Sal), Porto Novo (Santo Antão), Sal-Rei (Boavista) and Porto dos Cavaleiros (Fogo) are also scheduled to be finished by May, 2013.

A refurbishment project worth 300 million euros will be soon initiated at the Port of Mindelo.
