Nigeria: Community Against Ebeberegbene Dredging

First Marine and Engineering Company was fired yesterday from the Federal Government dredging project in Ebeberegbene community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

The dredging contract of a canal to link Bulou-Ndoro community was awarded to this company by the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, according to AllAfrica. However the company allegedly did not settle with the people before commencing the works.

Angry villagers occupied the company’s dredger yesterday as it was about to start the operations on Ebeberegbene waterside. The people feared that the dredging project might pollute their only source of drinking water and asked the company to provide alternative source of drinking water for them before beginning the project.

The company declined to settle with Ebeberegbene and other neighboring communities, but settled with Bulou- Ndoro community. The leader in the area, Mr. Yusuf Eregbene, urged the company to settle with the residents in order to avoid problems.
