Port Manatee officials want to to build a new container terminal and deepen its channel to 41 feet or more to attract ships that are benefitting from the expansion of the Panama Canal, according to baynews9.com.

Port Manatee’s Steve Tyndal hopes ships coming from the south will see the advantage of not having to travel all the way to Tampa.

“Now they will be able to use local port facilities to get into international trade and commerce. It’s really not as difficult as it may sound, ” he said.

The work is part of a decade-long, $200 million development project.
