Phase 2 of Miami-Dade County Shore Protection Project Starts Soon (USA)

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District announced that sand pumping operations will begin on Phase 2 of the Miami-Dade County Shore Protection project in Miami Beach May 21.

The contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, has been actively preparing and setting up for this operation since May 7.

During this phase of construction, sand will be removed from an accreted portion of the beach starting at 10th Street and moving north towards 18th Street. This sand will be placed via an underground pipeline to the highly eroded areas in the vicinity of 27th Street and 44th Street. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days per week.

Periodic closure of beach segments in these areas will occur. The closed areas will be clearly marked and fenced. The public is urged to use caution in these areas and to utilize adjacent beach areas. Work is expected to be completed by early November 2012.
