USACE: Public Invited to Pool 8 Islands Phase III Dedication Ceremony (USA)

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will celebrate the completion of the Pool 8 Islands Phase III Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Project during a public ceremony at Wildcat Park in Brownsville, Minn., Aug. 30 at 3 p.m.

The ceremony will include remarks from representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources, and Congressmen Tim Walz and Ron Kind’s offices. The winners of the recent “Name the Islands” contest will also be announced.

The Phase III project included the construction of more than 20 islands to protect existing habitat and provides the conditions necessary for the re-establishment of aquatic plant beds and deepwater habitat in the Mississippi River. The islands were constructed with dredged material from various sources within the floodplain and were protected with rocks and vegetation to prevent erosion. The project will improve habitat for a wide spectrum of fish and wildlife in the 3,000-acre area.
