Qatar: Weir Pumps Selected for New Doha Port Project

Weir Pumps Selected for New Doha Port Project

Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO) has selected Weir Minerals to supply pumps that will be used in the New Doha Sea Port dredging project, according to portfinanceinternational.com.

This capital construction project will require approximately 45 million cubic metres of mainly hard rock to be dredged from a 20km long approach channel and the port’s basin.

Under this agreement, Weir Minerals will supply MECO with the heavy-duty skid-mounted pump assemblies, each incorporating a Warman 550 TUL slurry pump, a 1000 hp diesel engine, a gearbox and a heavy-duty bearing frame, reports worldpumps.com.

Tony G Locke, managing director of Weir Minerals Europe, stated: “This is a project on an enormous scale – the amount of solid rock that will be dredged would be enough to fill the Great Pyramid at Giza 18 times over or the Royal Albert Hall 500 times over.”

The New Port will be developed in several phases to include three container terminals with a combined annual capacity in excess of six million containers per year and a railway station connected to the GCC Railway Network, thus connecting the New Port to neighboring countries and opening horizons to serve the joint market of the Gulf States.

Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO) is a partnership between the Qatari company United Development Company (UDC, 45.1%), Qatar Holding (Government of Qatar, 10%) and DEME (44.1%).

Weir Minerals are specialists in delivering and supporting slurry equipment solutions including pumps, hydrocyclones, valves, screen machines and screen media, rubber and wear resistant linings for global mining and mineral processing, the power sector and general industry.
