ABPmer, in association with law firm LA Marine, is hosting a half day seminar to assist harbour authorities in the region engage with the marine planning process to ensure that the policies in the South Coast Marine Plan Area are fit for purpose.

The seminar, being held in ABPmer’s dedicated seminar room in Southampton, is taking place on 16 May to coincide with the MMO’s issues and evidence gathering period.

Presentations include the value of marine planning policies to harbour authorities by Andrew Hignett of LA Marine and how information shaped the East Coast marine plan policies by Monty Smedley of ABPmer. Tom Woolley, Port and Harbour Marine Planner at the MMO will also be speaking and together with his colleague Elizabeth Brett will be seeking evidence and issues from attendees to inform the plan-making process.

Tracey Hewett, Events Manager at ABPmer, said: “The Marine Management Organisation state that the South of England was selected as the second area for marine plans due to the significant number of major ports in the area, a high level of shipping density in the English Channel and a high level of marinas and boat-based activities.

With such an economically important sector in this marine plan area, we thought that a forum to discuss the needs of the region as a collective would be helpful during the evidence and issues process.

With the MMO also in attendance we have an opportunity to increase understanding of the needs of this sector in the future and so start to shape policy.
