The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, posted a contractor solicitation to the Federal Business Opportunities, or FBO, website to accept bids for the removal of dredged material from the Grand Encampment placement site in Buffalo County, Wis.
The Corps needs to remove approximately 500,000 cubic yards of dredged material from the island in order to continue using the area as a placement site. The use of this area is required to allow continued maintenance of the 9-foot navigation channel. The channel provides commercial navigation tows with the necessary depth to transport their goods. The continued removal of dredged material is needed due to the recurrent transport of sediment by the river and filling in areas within the channel.
The Corps’ solicitation allows contractors to determine the best process of removing the material from the island, as well as the final disposition of the material. As a result of this approach, we hope to realize savings through the innovative approaches contractors develop. The contractor is required to get all the necessary permits prior to starting the project.
The solicitation is available for 60 days. The bid opening is currently scheduled for Sept. 6.
The nearly 700 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2011 $175 million budget, nearly 2,800 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $271 million to the national economy.
