USA: Blasting at Kill Van Kull to Proceed for Three More Weeks

As an important part of the New York Harbor dredging project, blasting program in the Kill Van Kull off Bayonne will proceed for at least another three weeks, according to nj.com.

This work will be undertaken between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and no blasting will be performed on Sundays or Federal Holidays.

To remove underlying bedrock in the channel, this contract involves precision controlled underwater staggered detonations to fracture the rock in order for it to be dredged.

The configuration of rock formations under the Kill Van Kull channel is the main reason why the contractor could not stated when exactly this project will be wrapped up, reports nj.com.

Background

The deepening program provides a safe and economically efficient pathway for the newest generation of container ships calling on the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The overall Harbor Deepening Project involves deepening the channels from the Ambrose Channel entrance to the Upper Bay and Newark Bay, providing access the Global Marine Terminal, New York Container Terminal, Port Newark, and Elizabeth Marine Terminal.

The $1.6 billion project, cost shared by The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, initiated prior to the announced improvements to the Panama Canal, is expected to maintain the Port of New York and New Jersey’s position as a premiere port on the East Coast.

The overall project consists of 17 contracts to deepen the navigation channels.
