Yesterday, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced that the contract has been awarded and work will begin this month on the $3.4 million project to repair Keansburg’s levees and remove debris resulting from Superstorm Sandy.
This Army Corps of Engineers project is funded at full federal expense and was made possible by the Sandy aid package passed by Congress. The contractor, Di Iorio Construction Corp. of Rutherford, New Jersey, is required to complete the work within 210 days of starting.
“Many residents of Keansburg faced serious flooding during Sandy unlike anything the community has ever seen,” said Pallone. “I’m pleased that the Army Corps is moving forward with this important project to restore our levees, which will protect Keansburg from flood threats.”
This project will restore levees in the Keansburg area to their original condition prior to the storm and will also repair a damaged wing wall at the Thornes Creek closure. The Army Corps has designed this repair to minimize impacts on operations at the marina entrance.This work is part of the larger Keansburg Beach Erosion and Hurricane Project. The beach replenishment and dune repair, which is a covered under a separate contract, will likely begin in the fall.
