Antwerp Port to Host GreenPort Congress (Belgium)

Antwerp Port to Host GreenPort Congress

Antwerp Port Authority is sponsoring the GreenPort Congress being held in the Hilton Hotel, Antwerp, from 9 to 11 October. The GreenPort Congress provides participants with a discussion platform where they can exchange know-how and experience concerning the latest trends and developments in the field of the environment and sustainability in the port.

This year the emphasis will be on innovative developments in policy, equipment and technology, based on practical examples and case studies.

The port of Antwerp has the ambition to be the sustainability leader in the Hamburg – Le Havre range. Where previously the emphasis was on economic development, in the future greater importance will be given to social matters that impinge on the port’s activities. The Port Authority supports this ambition, and makes numerous efforts to reduce the impact on people and on the environment as much as possible.

In addition the Port Authority contributes to the Sustainability Report, and supports events in favour of sustainability.

Second Sustainability Report now being prepared

The Sustainability Report is an effort by various leading players within the port of Antwerp to demonstrate how they are able to reconcile “people, planet & profit” in their day-to-day activities. The initiative-takers are Antwerp Port Authority and the Left Bank Development Corporation as public-sector players, and Alfaport representing private companies within the port.

In 2012 Antwerp was the first port in the world to publish a sustainability report as a joint effort by the entire port community. In recognition of this achievement it won three awards in a row including the prestigious Environmental World Ports Award. Now, one year later, work has started on a second Sustainability Report which revisits the original objectives and examines to what extent they have been achieved, where successes have been scored and what could be done better.
