The Netherlands: Deltares Article Wins Award

Deltares Article Wins Award

An article from three Deltares employees entitled ‘Model experiments on piled embankments’ has been picked as the best article of 2012 in ‘Geotextiles and Geomembranes’, an authoritative journal of the International Geosynthetics Society.

In their article the authors, Suzanne van Eekelen (Deltares), Adam Bezuijen (Deltares), Frits van Tol (Deltares) and Herman-Jaap Lodder (RPS) presented a series of tests conducted on piled embankments in the Deltares model hall.

A piled embankment consists of a field of piles supporting a reinforced soil surface. The reinforcement consists of geosynthetic material.

The tests were designed to optimise the design rules for the geosynthetic reinforcement of pile embankments. The test results were used to elaborate a new analytical design model.

It is not the first time that the work of this Deltares group has been recognised by an external agency.

A previous paper by Suzanne, Adam and Frits (which also looked at piled embankments) received the Keverling Buismanprijs and an honourable mention as one of the four best articles in the same journal.
