The Netherlands: Construction Starts on Container Transferium Alblasserdam

Construction Starts on Container Transferium Alblasserdam

Strabag Nederland started constructing the quay for Container Transferium Alblasserdam this month. The grooved-in quay is 255 metres long and recessed 30 metres on the Noord river. Behind it is the 4-hectares terminal at Nieuwland business park, close to the A15 motorway.

It is anticipated that the new port site can be delivered to terminal operator BCTN at the end of 2014. BCTN can then start handling containers at the start of 2015.

The Container Transferium, intended to relieve the A15 motorway of 200,000 TEU in containers per year, was announced in the summer of 2009. At that time, the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, Randstad Urgent, the Province of South Holland, the Drechtsteden Board and the Port of Rotterdam Authority signed a covenant to this aim.

Last year, operator BCTN and the Port of Rotterdam Authority signed a contract for the operation of Container Transferium Alblasserdam. The construction of the quay was delayed mainly due to the disappointing soil conditions.

Adjacent sites

The Port Authority is currently in discussion with various parties about the adjacent sites of approximately seven hectares, but no contracts have yet been concluded. The Port Authority is especially interested in parties from the logistics sector which can strengthen the Container Transferium.
