ADPC Wins ADAEP for Khalifa Port

ADPC, the master developer of ports and industrial zones has won a much sought after Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance (ADAEP).

ADPC was presented with the “Strategic Transformation Project / Team” by His Highness Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the Khalifa Port Project at a special award ceremony held at ADNEC on the evening of Monday, November 18, 2013.

The Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance (ADAEP) is an award which seeks to spread and promote a culture of excellence in the Government of Abu Dhabi.

Entries must outline the implementation of a project, the monitoring of results and performance, and a practical framework for evaluation and results.

The plan must demonstrate the link between method and results, cause and effect, as well as showing the importance of linking feedback into project management and results.

These awards are only presented every three years and this year saw 751 submissions spread over the 24 award categories (12 for individuals and 12 for entities). Through a rigorous assessment process which involved independent overseas assessment teams spending days interviewing personnel and validating data through audits, ADPC was short-listed in the Strategic Transformation Project / Team along with Department of Transport and Etihad Airways.

This process culminated last night with the presentation of the award to ADPC which reaffirms the incredible achievement of the delivery of Khalifa Port.

Acting CEO Mohamed Al Shamisi who received the award on ADPC’s behalf said: “This is an enormous honour for everyone in ADPC and a fantastic achievement for a company as young as ADPC. Project delivery, especially one of the scale and complexity of Khalifa Port, relies on a high-performing team in which every single member fulfils their role.

This award recognises the efforts that everyone at ADPC has individually and collectively, put in over the last few years, in order to successfully deliver this world class piece of infrastructure that will continue to be the cornerstone of the Abu Dhabi 2030 plan for years to come.

Khalifa Port is crucial to the ADPC megaproject which includes Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad), whose Area A consists of 51 square kilometres. Khalifa Port offers direct access for all companies setting up in Kizad. The megaproject will create more than 100,000 jobs, contributing 15% of the Emirate’s non-oil GDP by 2030.

Designed with a 16 metres draft and a four kilometres quay wall, Khalifa Port features the latest technology and is capable of accommodating the largest container ships. The initial annual capacity of the port’s first phase is 2.5 million TEU’s of container traffic and 12 million tons of general cargo.

Through phased development the port is designed to grow to a capacity of 15 million TEU’s container traffic and 35 million tons of general cargo by 2030.

The offshore Port has been constructed on a reclaimed Port Island with an offshore area extending over 2.7 square kilometres and the Container Terminal situated more than four kilometres out to sea. This is to help protect the Ras Ghanada coral reef, adjacent to the onshore port areas. ADPC spent AED 880 Million (USD 240 million) building the 8 kilometre-long Environmental Protection Breakwater that helps protects the marine life and coral reef.
