Authority Delays Great Barrier Reef Dredging Decision

Statement by Bruce Elliot, general manager for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority:

On 11 December 2013, Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt approved an application by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) to expand its coal terminal at Abbot Point.

As part of this project, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is now carefully considering the permit application from North Queensland Bulk Ports for disposal of dredge material.

We have extended the time for making a decision on the dredge disposal application under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act until 31 January 2014.”
