The Corps of Engineers ensures America’s inland waterways are navigable for commerce through various means, including locks and dams, dredging, river training structures and revetments. The St. Louis District manages 300 miles of the Mississippi River, which includes the 195 mile long Middle Mississippi River.

Since the production of the Final Environmental Statement, Mississippi River between the Ohio and Missouri Rivers, Regulating Works (1976 EIS), there has been a large amount of new information and circumstances relating to potential environmental impacts on the Middle Mississippi River. Therefore, the St. Louis District is preparing a Supplemental EIS.

The SEIS will cover the use of river training structures, bank line revetments, dredging, the Chain of Rocks Canal and Locks (Locks 27), and the Low Water Dam (Dam No. 27).
