HR Wallingford Develops BS 8582

A new code of practice for surface water management for development sites has been published. Urban drainage experts from HR Wallingford developed this new British Standard (BS 8582) working alongside the British Standards Institute.

This new standard will help developers, local authorities, architects and engineers to manage the risks of flooding and reduce resultant pollution.

Although a lot of guidance is already available about flooding, it can often be confusing and contradictory. BS 8582 gives clear guidance that can be used by those involved in development planning, so that they can take into consideration surface water management as part of the planning process more effectively than ever before.

The standard gives recommendations on the planning, design, construction and maintenance of surface water management systems for new developments and redevelopment sites. This covers both surface water runoff resulting from rain falling on the site and runoff that has come from sources other than the site itself.
