The Philippines: DPWH Funds Bataan Dredging

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will initially allot some P400 million for the implementation of the massive dredging projects in province.

The move aims to solve the perennial flooding problems, particularly in the northern part of the province, as caused by heavily silted waterways.

DPWH 1st district engineer Wilfredo S. Mallari said that P100 million has been initially released to start the dredging activities.

Mallari said that DPWH Secretary Rogelio has also committed to release an additional P300 million for the project that will be used to dredge the heavily silted Dinalupihan and Hermosa towns.

He said the total funds was recommended by DPWH regional director Antonio Molano following the computation of the program of works for massive dredging, diversion and rechanneling of waterways, among others.

He said at least P3.5 billion is the estimated cost needed for the implementation of the massive dredging projects in the province in the next seven years.

The DPWH official also said that they have already crafted a feasibility studies on how to address the flooding problem in Dinalupihan and Hermosa in Bataan and Lubao town, Pampanga, together with the cost of the projects that would take seven years to do it.
