USA: DNR Seeks Public Comment on Rule Changes Approving Corps’ Permit

DNR Seeks Public Comment on Rule Changes Approving Corps' Permit

The DNR is seeking public input on rule changes for projects that have an impact on Iowa waters, including wetlands and lakes.

Every five years the DNR can provide input on the regional permit 7 approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Regional permit 7 is a general permit issued by the Corps for work in streams, lakes and wetlands for road and bridge-type projects.

The DNR’s proposed rule changes provide that input.

The public is invited to make oral or written comments at 1 p.m., April 9, in Conference Room 5E, Wallace State Office Building, 502 E. Ninth St. in Des Moines.

Transportation projects with minimal impact may be covered by the Corps’ regional permit 7.

The regional permit authorizes road, bridge, railroad and trail construction projects, as well as culvert installation, to proceed faster.

If planning a road, trail or bridge project in one of our lakes, streams or wetlands, you must apply for a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before construction begins,” said Chris Schwake, a DNR environmental specialist. The DNR’s new rules will let applicants get their Corps’ permits more quickly.”
