Bundaberg Regional Council has welcomed news that the State Government will start dredging the Burnett River near Kirby’s Wall from next month.
Mayor, Cr Mal Forman , said the announcement came after months of negotiations between Council and the State Government.
“ I have had a number of extensive meetings with State Government representatives, including the Director general of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, about dredging and improving the river ever since the floods of January last year, which severely impacted on its health ,” Cr Forman said.
“ We’re glad this project has finally been given the green light as it will benefit all river users .”
Cr Forman said, based on advice from the State Government, approximately 65,000 cubic meters of sand and gravel would be dredged from an area near Kirby’s Wall to improve navigation of the river.
“ With dredging equipment to be positioned in the river during this time, it’s important that all water users exercise extra caution when the project gets underway ,” he said.
