Peru Hosts “The Amazon Waterway” Event

The Amazon Waterway

The Private Investment Promotion Agency (ProInversión), in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), recently held the information event on “The Amazon Waterway”, a project intended to improve the navigability conditions in the Peruvian Amazon river waterway system.

The project’s Development Area comprises the Marañón and Amazon Rivers, Saramiriza-Iquitos-Santa Rosa section; Huallaga River, Yurimaguas-Marañón River confluence section; and the Ucayali River, Pucallpa-Marañón River confluence section.

This is a very important project for the Amazon region, as it will enable passenger and cargo ships to navigate in safe and efficient conditions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for the rivers that compose this system, such as Huallaga, Marañón, Ucayali and Amazon, and for the access to the Port of Iquitos,” said manager of the Amazon Waterway project at ProInversión Edgar Patiño.

Patiño said that the execution of this project will not change the river conditions, since the sand extracted to build the navigation channels will be relocated in the riverbed itself, respecting the environment and not interfering with the normal development of the Amazon flora and fauna.
