Corps Keeps James River Open for Traffic

The James River has and continues to be an economic engine for the nation, charged with keeping the waterway open and safe for vessel traffic is the Norfolk District.

The James River Federal Navigation Project extends from Hampton Roads, Virginia to Richmond, Virginia covering a distance of 90.8 miles.

The channel portion of project is currently maintained to: 25 feet deep and 300 feet wide from the mouth to Hopewell; 25 feet deep and 200 feet wide from Hopewell to Richmond Deepwater Terminal; and 18 feet deep and 200 feet wide from Deepwater Terminal to the Richmond Lock.

A turning basin in Richmond Harbor is currently maintained to 18 feet deep, 200 feet wide and 600 feet long.
