Canada: Minister Announces Important Investment in Pangnirtung Harbor

Minister Announces Important Investment in Pangnirtung Harbor

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced that the Government of Canada is making further investments at Pangnirtung Harbor to improve berthing conditions for local fish harvesters.

This is part of the Government of Canada’s investment of $106 million in repair, construction, maintenance and dredging projects at harbors across Canada. This includes regular program funding for 2014-15 and an additional $40 million over two years, as announced in Economic Action Plan 2014.

“This announcement is an example of how our Government is investing in the future of Canada’s north. We were proud to invest in the construction of the first small craft harbor in Nunavut. This additional investment will address overcrowding in the harbor while enabling further access to the inshore commercial fishery and add to Pangnirtung’s marine-based transportation links with other Nunavut communities,” said  Aglukkaq.
