The Philippines: Dredging Solves Flooding Problems for Sta. Barbara

Dredging Solves Flooding Problems for Sta. Barbara

Mayor Carlito Zaplan said that flooding is no longer a huge problem in Sta. Barbara because of the continuous dredging and diking of the Sinocalan River.

Zaplan said this in his State of the Municipality Address (SOMA) on Wednesday where he enumerated what he has done from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

I feel that the greatest reward for doing is the opportunity to do more,” said Zaplan before some 2,000 residents.

He said flooding is no longer a big problem and is confined only among the lowest barangays of the town as a result of the continuous dredging of the Sinocalan River that drains into the town and the construction of dikes along its banks.

He said he already requested from the Department of Public Works and Highways for the repair and rehabilitation of dikes covering six barangays costing P120 million which were damaged during the onslaught of typhoon “Maring” last year and his request was already validated by the DPWH regional director officer-in-charge.

If the request is granted, the flooding problem in 29 barangays will be finally solved,” said Zaplan.
