USA: New Sand for Jupiter Beach

In mid-September, Palm Beach County will begin hauling 200,000 cubic yards of sand for a beach renourishment project south of the Jupiter Inlet.

Approximately 120 truckloads of sand per day will travel from a mine in St. Lucie County via I-95 and Indiantown Road to a staging area in Carlin Park. The contractor will minimize impacts to traffic by avoiding the peak morning rush hour.

Beach work will be conducted between sunrise and sunset Monday through Saturday beginning November 12. The county will place the sand along 3,500 feet of beach and install 200,000 dune plants.

The $5.5 million project, funded by the county’s tourist development tax and the state of Florida, is expected to be completed by March 31, 2015.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will dredge an additional 100,000 cubic yards of sand from an offshore borrow site and place it at Jupiter Beach Park in November.

The county conducted two previous large-scale restorations at Jupiter Beach in 1995 and 2002.
