Stockton Port Dredging Project Wins Approval

Stockton Port annual dredging program for deepening of the port’s five ship berths along the Rough and Ready Island waterfront has been given the green light by the Port Commission.

According to the port officials, the Commission on Monday authorized the spending of up to $1.9 million for the dredging program that will begin within the next couple of days.

Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. will perform the work over the next two weeks before the company starts dredging the main portion of the Stockton Deep Water Channel. The first estimates from the port officials show that here is about 220,000 cubic yards of soil to be removed from the berths.

The Stockton Deep Water Channel contract is part of a previously awarded $24 million USACE contract for maintenance dredging along the Sacramento and Stockton deep water ship channels.

Maintenance dredging for the two deep water ship channels occurs annually between August 1st and November 30th to minimize environmental impacts.

The dredging project work will maintain both river channels at their navigable depths of 30 feet for the Sacramento River and 35 feet for the San Joaquin River.
