Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is inviting local people to come along to a public drop in session to find out more about proposals for a new scheme which could improve flood protection for more than 660 properties in Crindau, Newport.
An assessment by NRW has shown that the existing flood defenses at Crindau Pill have deteriorated and are no longer providing adequate flood protection for people in the area. Earlier this year the organisation evaluated potential options for a new scheme and has since secured funding from the Welsh Government to proceed.
The proposed scheme will extend along the banks of the River Usk and Crindau Pill between the M4 motorway and the mainline railway. It will involve installing new floodwalls, creating new embankments and raising the ground level at low points. The project team will also be looking for opportunities to improve community areas and habitats for wildlife as part of the works.
The drop in session will take place on Monday 10 November, at the Shaftesbury Community Centre between 2-8pm.
Gareth O’Shea, Operations Manager for South East Wales, Natural Resources Wales said: “ There is a long history of tidal flooding in Crindau, so this scheme will be an important step forward for local people. As we’ve progressed with our designs, we’ve been working closely with affected landowners to make sure that any concerns are addressed at an early stage, and with Newport City Council to agree the best solutions for public areas such as Shaftesbury Park.”
“ This drop in session is now an opportunity for local people to find out more about the plans, give their comments and ask any questions to our specialists about their flood risk, and how the scheme will benefit them, ” added O’Shea.
NRW plans to submit a planning application for the scheme by the end of the year. If it gets the go ahead from Newport City Council, the organisation hopes to get work off the ground late 2015.
