The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District’s multi-functional debris vessel SNELL is in Florida providing support to the Jackson District’s Jacksonville Harbor Expansion Project.

The crew of the SNELL is working with Jacksonville District Geotechical Engineers to gather sediment samples for an environmental assessment for widening the harbor.

Onboard the SNELL is a vibracore, a device that drills tubes into into the harbor floor to gather sediment for environmental analysis.

Jacksonville Harbor deepening project will modernize and expand the port to strengthen its competitive position in the global economy. The initial engineering and design work is expected to take 18 months. Deepening construction could begin as early as 2016.
