CIRIA, the construction industry research and information association, and Central Dredging Association (CEDA) will next Wednesday, February 4th, hold the Risk Assessment and Management of Contaminated Sediments event in London.
The event will examine how the risks of contaminated sediments in UK could be assessed and managed.
In some parts of the UK, increased dredging has been carried out in rivers and canals to mitigate flooding. This is likely to increase the pressure on the current capability for dealing with these materials in this country.
Background
Sediments play multiple roles in the environment. It is possible that they carry contaminants, a habitat, a resource – or all three. Freshwater and marine sediments can be contaminated by a range of substances as a result of deliberate and non-deliberate incidents – these can be permitted or unpermitted releases. Management of large-scale contaminated sediment, remedial investigations and remediation projects can be resource-intensive.
